Calorie burn per Mile?

Calorie burn per Mile?

To continue from yesterday …. “How Many calories do we burn per Mile of exercise?”
All of these factors play a part in the actual number of calories used (burned) ….

AGE, GENDER, your WEIGHT, your EFFORT (INTENSITY), your FITNESS level, HORMONES, some GENETICS ….. and even things like medications, etc.
could effect the rate at which our bodies use calories during exercise and the rate that we use calories just for basic body functions like breathing, eating, controlling body temperature, circulating blood … even at rest we are always burning calories. So it’s pretty clear that the EXACT number of calories burned will always be a challenge to nail down …. no matter how improved the tools and technology get to measure calorie burn, it will be an approximate number. BUT WAIT …. even with all that said …. we can get close just by knowing the “intensity” of the exercise and body weight.

Our walks always move at a brisk pace – we design the speed (miles per hour) of the walk by the beats per minute of the music – if you keep the pace of our walk and follow the arm movements at full intensity … you can burn at least 100 calories per mile … your body weight will determine if it will be a bit under this amount (a lighter body weight will burn less calories) …. others will burn over 100 calories because of a higher body weight … and don’t forget all those MUSCLE ACTIVATING Walk Boosters …. if you use hand weights, bands, belts …. you BOOST the intensity of the Walk …. you BURN MORE calories!

The simple answer to “How many calories do we burn per Mile?”
The Walk without Boosters … approx. 100 calories per mile!
The Walk with Boosters ….. approx. 125 – 150 calories per mile!

Please stay with me for one more point …. the calorie burn of any activity is just one of the MANY positive responses that our body experiences … you are doing SO MUCH MORE than burning calories …. you are changing what your body is composed of (less body fat – more lean tissue) you are improving all of your body systems – circulatory, skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory, immune, …. the energy you gain from exercise will continue to bring you to your goals …. it’s not just about the numbers …. a BETTER BODY, a HEALTHY BODY is always a result of your active life!

I am so thrilled that you WALK my friends! Thanks for the great questions!

Leslie you are right in saying many things including certain medications can affect one’s ability to burn calories,I am a good example , one of the medications I take for blood pressure slows down the metabolism and I have to work really hard to try and lose weight due to that, but since starting your walk at home programs it has really helped me offset the slowed metabolism and break thru my plateau, I have now started losing some weight FINALLY, I also am watching what I eat,no starchy, sugary foods etc, I do the four fast miles at least 3 days a week and its really working for me,so THANK YOU LESLIE !!!

What blood pressure med do you take? I am just curious because I am atenolol for my blood pressure and seems since I have been taking that I need to work harder to loose weight. Thanks.

hello ms jackie. i read about some articles in the internet and it says that losing weight comes from 20% exercise and 80% from the food we take. Since you are doing the exercise part, given you have the proper intensit, you must also look after what you eat. If you have a 1200 caloric allowance each day, you must take 20% off 1200 calories to safely lose weight. So it means that you should only eat 960 calories a day in order to see results. I, too, have been exercising for 3 months now using Leslie’s exercise videos. In the first month of doing exercises and taking in about 1200 calories a day, i lost about 3 kilos because I have been taking more than 1200 calories BEFORE that. And then the next months i kind of stayed and never lost weight after that and then i read the articles. At about 1000 calories of food now and added intensity with my exercises, I am starting to lose weight again. Try leslie’s burn body fat bec she used handweights which pumps up your routine. Goodluck!

Ena, that is the worst advice ever. Eating only 960 a day is an extreme calorie deficit and NOT suitable for all people. You can actually be damaging your metabolism by eating so little. It might be suitable for some who are very petite already, or some who are extremely heavy who do it for a short while to get them out of the danger zone for certain immediate health risks, but for most people this is bad advice. That amount of calories is under the amount of most people’s BMR which is the amount of calories your body needs just to function at rest, sleeping, brain function, organs, etc. BMR plus all of your waking activity, work, exercise, cooking, cleaning, everything else you do is called TDEE. You need to create a calorie deficit from TDEE to lose weight. But generally not less than BMR. Jackie, use an online calculator to determine your estimated BMR and TDEE, or get a Fitbit or similar device to estimate what your burn is.

Leslie, I’ve been doing your video tapes and DVDs for about 8 years. I love them. The walks are the only exercise I love doing. I’m 65 (I don’t look it!) and the other year I knew I had to get serious about weight loss with your videos and eating healthier I’ve lost 40 lbs. I could loose 10 or 20 more (which I’m working on) but I wear a size 8 so I’m not complaining. I look good and I’m happy. When you’re in your 60’s loosing weight takes work…so I use the W.W point system and the Walk tapes. I mix them up but I always use the Walk Strong with weights…that’s my favorites because you do the cardio, lunges and squats and the weights. That is a great work out. My other favorites are the “Walk Slim”. “Walk Your Belly Flat” and “5Mile Fat Burning Walk”. I do at least an hour 3-4times a week but I try for everyday.

    Leslie and Walking Community-
I am a healthy 45 year old at 1+ year post-op having had my left kidney and tumor removed. I have two post op symptoms that your Walking programs have helped.

#1 I was/am cold all the time- but doing a 4 mile boosted walk program early in the morning keeps me warm into the afternoon.
#2 I can not do any low carb diets (very hard on my lone kidney). So I practice portion control, keep a food journal to track calories, and have eliminated white sugar, white flour, and HFCS. Slowly and steadily I am losing a pound every 1-2 weeks and an invigorated by increased cardiovascular endurance. I’ve put on lean muscle mass, have a strong core, and sleep well ๐Ÿ™‚ After a year of sedentary post-op recovery I am active and feeling charged doing “Walk Slim 4 mile and Walk Away Your Belly Fat 3 mile” plus extra stretching while warm. Your DVD’s are a lot of fun and I’m still not bored after two full months of excersizing every day with you ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks a million!

Leslie! Leslie! Leslie, what can I say other than you have really been a third wheel in my life, at the end of December of 2010 I had my blood drawn per my doctor’s request and my numbers were high with my cholesterol and tryglerceride I had a birthday coming in January and I exclaimed to my sister Becky that I needed to change my life style so she went out an bought me your walk at home dvd for my birthday and it has changed my life, I have stopped smoking cigarettes and stopped drinking for my health and to keep up with you! Hopefully in a couple more weeks my blood test numbers will lower because I walk the 4 miles nearly everyday!

Leslie, I am so happy I resumed the walking program again.
This is my third week and I am seeing a difference in my figure.
For about three years I stopped and started to walk around our subdivision 2.5 miles, I was so bored, so I stopped. I gain about 15 lbs based on my clothes, I went from a loose size 10 to tight size 12 I am not going to weigh myself. When my size 10″s fit me I will know I have reached my goal. I try to walk the two miles walk everyday. I love the way you talk to us on the video.
    Thank You Leslie!!!

Leslie I love your workouts. Have been doing them since the late nineties. I still do the original three mile walk with the balls. I would like to see you start using calorie burned watches for low, medium and high intensity. I know its not an exact science but it would leave me and many others feeling better at the end of your workouts to know an approximate calorie burn. I turned sixty last year and the older I get the more I will depend on your collection as well as strength training. It is so hard to do all the jumping around that others seem to promote.

Although I’ve used Leslie Sansone’s fitness videos-walk challenge in the past and lost a ton of weight-approximately 85 lbs (at least 5-6 mi wk) I now have pulled the videos again, after a weight gain of a good twenty pounds since 07/11. A lot of events have played a large part in this, specifically my Mother’s death 09/11 in VA and I in CA. It’s hard when your husband loves to eat out, suffers from Bi-polar II, which his meds cause extreme fatique, and at times create a struggle for him to maintain his current working position. We’ve resided in CA since 06/01/11, with a few mths remaining in his work contract, which will then allow us to return to our home state of VA. I can not stress enough how her incredible system works for all-age groups and at this time hope to find success in what has been tried and true. This evening I worked out, doing 2 miles along with an older DVD -“Fast and Firm-4 Big Miles” and look to achieve a working-out network amongst everyone here, for I don’t know too many people here and all of my surviving friends and family reside in VA.

Leslie- I love your energy/spirit and at times, feel as though you’re right in the room with us. Thank you for all that you do & GOD bless you & your’s!!! To everyone else that may be reading along, best of luck in your dieting/exercising goals!!!

Note: Can anyone direct me to where I may be able to purchase “Walk At Home” inspirational T-Shirts?

    I absolutely love your workouts!
They are fun and relatively easy to start out with. i’m a mother to three wonderful children and needless to say i’ve been out of shape for a while and was getting Very discouraged because i couldn’t do the more intense workouts like 30 day shred etc. ๐Ÿ™‚ i know that’s kinda silly but i’m sure you’ve heard it before. Anyways after trying out several different workout videos and classes and even different equipment I finally found one of your videos. I tried it and have been hooked ever since! I went from a size 14 to a size 8 jeans in about 4 months. I got pregnant with our little girl and had to stop but now i’m back on my workout schedule and i have gone from a size 14 (again) to a size 10 (so far) But i’m not done yet! ๐Ÿ™‚ my goal is a size 6 so i’ll keep you posted!! ๐Ÿ™‚ Thank you SO SO much!

I have multiple sclerosis – have had it for at least 28 years, maybe as long as 37 years (long story). I started with the 1 mile walk, and after about 6 weeks went to the 2 mile walk. I believe I have to work somewhat harder than “normal” people to do the workout and wonder if I burn more calories?

The DVDs are great. I get a great sweat going and feel more energized throughout the day. I am up to 3 – 12 minute miles a day.

I am about 80 – 100 lbs overweight at 32 years old. I have tried so many things over the years to lose the weight, with very little long term success. I am currently in a size 20, I would love to get back to a 14 (its been 14 years since I have seen that size).

About 2 years ago, I broke my leg and now have a rod from my knee to my ankle. My knee has never been the same.
I joined a class at the local rec center, but couldn’t continue to go; all the jumping around and running was just too much.
But I can do your videos…even the BOOSTS.

    Thank you, Leslie!

I am a 49 year old out of shape woman,
until I had my son I was very active, Playing on a softball team for many years, I had a hard body. ( now that I look back ) I wish I had appreciated my body more.
After having my first child, my life changed, I was mom and started acting more like Grandma .. everything was about him. I adored my son and was so happy to have him . It was all about him.
I allowed my body to change and wasn’t focused on myself at all.
Child two came along, even more wrapped up in their lives. I noticed that my body and self worth was changing but I tried to ignore it. I went on several crash diets lost weight and muscle at the same time. gain the weight back plus some and again fell back in denial of how I was hurting myself.
My two sons are grown now, 25 and 22 and I have a 12 year old daughter now as well.
Last spring I bought your DVD Four fast miles. looked at it and put it back in the case. I just wasn’t ready.
I felt tired. and depressed and was on anti depressants which made me feel awful.
At 49 and 190 pounds at 5 ft tall I wasn’t ready to be old. I realized that I had lost so much time in my life. I had let my body get old but my mind is still young and determined to get healthy .
8 weeks ago I got the DVD out , put it in and watched the first mile. and said I can do this. I did one mile, for a week, then went to 2 miles for 5 weeks, then 3 miles for one week. now I’m doing the 4 miles all the way through seven days a week.
I have lost 16 pounds and I’m wearing jeans I have had from my crash diet days many years ago, they may be out of style but I am down two pants sizes … I now see that I can do this, I wanted to drop 60 pounds before I turn 50 in December but I already feel so much better, It doesn’t matter if it takes longer, I feel like I can get there with your DVD. I am not taking antidepressants, I am eating healthy. veggies, fruits lots and lots of water and go to sleep at night looking forward to my walk time with you… I have bought two other DVD’s Walk away the pounds, and the Ultimate 5 day walk plan. I also want the 30 day walk off the pounds DVD but it was out of stock at my local store, I will get it but I have enough to keep me busy and motivated until I get the new DVD>
I go on facebook and post things about your walk at home DVDs and people will be more inspired when they see me this summer in shorts and t shirts .. I haven’t worn shorts or put on a swim suit in 20 years but I will this summer… thanks Leslie, I owe my new attitude to you..
    Thanks again

    Hello Leslie, hello “walkers” ๐Ÿ™‚
I just discovered Leslie’s programm last week and wow, I like it a lot. I never felt comfortable at the gym. I went there few times but I always came back hating my self. So time passed by, I am 43 years old, I had a misscarriage 3 years ago and since then my body can’t decide if it will go to menopause or not. From 60 kilos 3 years ago, I weigh now 86 and I have decided : no more. So, to make things shorter: I started last week with the 3 miles . Today I did the 4 miles sequence and wow, I didn’t dropped down dead . I could go a little more. But step by step. Next week I will increase to 5. I am so glad I have discovered you , Leslie. I didnt weigh myself yet, but I only started for few days so …maybe I lost like 200 grams, haha. Anyway I am decided to keep going. To all of you friends out there, trying and struggling: it is worth it. I was a lazy ass and a mutt since I can remember and now I have to work hard. But I will. Good luck everybody. Stay determined, strong and healthy. Don’t eat too much and whenever (oh, I forgot, I am a foodie, grrr). And remember: walk, walk, walk.

I recently found a few of your videos online! You and your walk team are amazing, I am feeling better and my blood glucose levels as well as heart rate are finally on the normal side from what it was. I am 28 and up until now all of my 20’s have been a nightmare as far as health concerns, but the walking REALLY helps! I know some people are concerned it doesn’t burn many calories, but for me the benefits of lower blood glucose levels, and my heart rate being normal outweighs the weight not coming off very fast- which I have lost 4 lbs in a month(yes I know doesn’t sound like a lot but hey its better than none or gaining correct?) I hope to continue on, and continue to watch my progress ๐Ÿ™‚ THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH!!!

Been a Leslie walker for at least 14 years…might be on 15 now….I used to be inspired by a guy (Eldon I believe) who was in one of her earlier videos that was 70 at the time. I’ll be 70 in January and just finished the 20 minute 3 mph walk/15 min 4 mph walk on the video I got from WW. Probably could have gone on to the 12 minute 5 mph segment…but, I have to admit, I was kind of tired after the 4 mph segment. I’ll get it next time. Tomorrow is free weights day….walking comes again on Monday.

Just discovered Leslie’s workouts a few weeks ago. I just turned 60 and haven’t excersied in DECADES. I was a bit skeptical at first, wasn’t sure if I could even complete the 1 mile workout. Did it and loved it! I’m trying to lose 40 lbs and am now monitoring my calorie intake. I do the 1 mile 2 or 3 times a day. Want to try the 2 , 3 and 4 mile workouts. Thank you Leslie and team!!!!! I’ve lost 12 lbs and look forward to the workouts each day. Love your laugh, you make it so fun. THANK YOU!!!

I love the walking video and with not eating more than 30 carbs a day I have lost 30lbs in 5 weeks I still eat pretty much what I want but instead of pasta or potatoes I like spinach dip and maybe some green beans or salad I have lots of tricks I eat meatballs when I want Italian I’ll make taco salad for Mexican and when I want pizza I get extra thin with extra cheese and meat most of time I dont even want the crust and for sweet tooth alittle dark chocolate or spray some whip cream from can lol but its working I have a terrible disease and it cause the most horrific pain but since I’ve stopped with processed food and limit carbs i have less flare ups so it’s worth it leslie is a life saver I could barely stand when i first started this program and it took me almost 2 months just to make to 15 min but I did it I feel her encourage threw her videos good luck all just remember if u slip up tommrw another day

Hi Leslie very interesting your comments. I started walking 10 weeks ago ,I was burning 120 calories per mile and I am down to 48 calories per mile, this 6 days a week brisk walking for 4.7 miles per day. I have reduced 40 lbs with excerise and balance diet. It seems that I can not increase burning calories.
