Our MILE System!

Good Monday Morning friends!
We just had another AWESOME question come in … this one on our Mile System! How do we measure a Mile in our style of walking?
We measure “miles” by matching the “beats per minute” of the music …. to “miles per hour” – the speed of walking.

Years ago – at my Fitness Center – when I was designing my Group Exercise Classes – I would count every beat in a song from the radio! Then I would walk on a treadmill to check how many “miles per hour” that song was paced at. Whew … it took a long time to get a full list of songs that fit the pace of the class and also the many variations in speed during the 1 hour class! From a slow Warm Up pace to a SPEEDY aerobic pace … engineering music to make a great class is every Instructors challenge! Thankfully … I don’t have to walk on a treadmill to convert speeds anymore …. now that I think of those old days …. I was more fit …. hmmmm more testimony to how “technology” has taken physical movement out of our day! Now I convert pace … with my computer …. the blessings and the challenges of modern day!!!!!!

The music in our DVD workouts is intended as a tool for keeping the right pace – the right pace for a “warm up” – the right pace for “fat burning” – the right pace for “aerobic fitness” – the right pace for Cool Downs – the right pace for stretching …. and on and on!
In the walks you’ll hear me remind those that are “new” to our walks – that we don’t use music to “dance” to … but only to keep the walking pace … it’s a tool for me – the leader – to keep the workout moving at the speed that gets us the most benefit for aerobic conditioning – which leads to great health ….. and the speed for high calorie burning – which leads to weight loss!

And just a note on using Pedometers during our walks ……. because our movements are “in place” during some of the workout – like “Knee Lifts” – a pedometer will not always register each step. We put alot of time into the “pace” of the music so that you are getting a workout that is similar to the Miles we calculate – and to that point … I have to mention …. our walks use more muscle in more directions than traditional walking …. our MILES are SUPER MILES!!!!

    Good ‘cool, rainy’ morning to all of you! Leslie – while you were off walking the 3 miles from Walk Slim, I was walking with the new 3 miler that is streaming – nice, nice, nice!!! I really enjoyed the new miles and some of the familiar younger walkers as well as the new faces – and so good working out with that oh so versatile firm band!!!

    Its another new month everyone – new beginnings; forget the not-so-good choices you might have made last month – this is a new month with a clean slate/calendar just waiting to be in filled with lots of great walking and healthy food choices!!

    Had a setback last week (unexpected death in the family). I didn’t walk at all. It’s Monday and I’m back at it! My body, however, is revolting because I haven’t walked in a week it’s letting me know it’s not happy about it…lol. Feels good to walk and sweat!

    Leslie, you did my all-time favorite workout today: 3 Fast Miles! Which of your walks is your favorite? Or which series do you like best?

    I did 5K with a Twist today. That’s another favorite of mine. 🙂

    I have a suggestion to offer!! It would be fun to see some of the older walk away pound and walk at home dvds and vidoes streammed on to the website for some of the other walkers who might not have some of the oldies but goodies as the “walk express” dvds and some of the “origenal walk away the pounds” dvds. They are referred to on the curent dvds that are in use right now. Its a suggestion, and I think it would be interesting to see some of them again. EVERYONE KEEP WALKING AND HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!

    Hi Leslie and Fellow Walkers, Just came back from hospital where I had a bone test done today and I’m late getting started on my walk for today. Headed off to do 5 mile walk at home advanced and more walks later after dinner. Great hearing from Leslie !!! You inspire us so much!!!!!

    LOVE the program. have known about it for years—used it sporadically and it has always helped me to lose weight. A few months ago something clicked inside and I am now on a roll losing and walking consistently. I am determined to be a success story! To be one of the before and after people is a dream! i am about 37 pounds down with another 50 to go. I will not grow weary, but continue on this path! The 4 mile walk is awesome and I have the most recent 5 mile walk on order! Thanks Leslie! I don;t know WHAT I would do without ya! LOVE the new blog. I need all the motivation I can get!
